Wizz Air opens a new base in Catania and launches 5 more routes on the Etna airport

Wizz Air announced today its new 36th base in Catania. The airline will base 2 Airbus A321 at Catania airport from October 2020. Alongside the creation of the new base and the completion of the 15 routes already operational, Wizz Air announced 5 new routes to Rome Fiumicino, Bologna, Venice, Memmingen (Münich West) and London Luton from Catania and a new route from Milan Malpensa to Bari from October 2020. The routes to Catania will thus become 20.

Wizz Air started flying from Catania in 2009, and since then has carried more than 1.5 million passengers to and from the Sicilian city. The establishment of its new 36th base in Catania will generate greater economic growth in the region and create jobs in related sectors.

«Today's announcement - says a note spread by the press office of the Sac that manages the Vincenzo Bellini airport in Catania - will support local tourism in Catania and will allow students to return to their universities and families to spend more time together and will strengthen business relationships within and outside the borders of Italy».

The birth of the Wizz Air hub in Catania was illustrated during a press conference at the airport of the city. «Exactly one week after announcing our first Italian domestic routes from Milan Malpensa to Catania and Palermo - George Michalopoulos, CCO of Wizz Air, said - we are excited to celebrate the establishment of our base in Catania with 2 Airbus A321, offering ultra low fares on domestic destinations and to European cities, as well as supporting the local economy and creating new jobs at this critical time».

«I would like to underline - Nico Torrisi, CEO of Sac, added - that what happened today is anti-cyclical. In a moment of great world crisis, still far from being overcome, the fact that an important operator has decided to focus on Catania, opening an operational base, is encouraging news. For this I want to thank Wizz Air, whose investment shows how the airport of Catania and, in general, our territory, is still highly attractive».
